Last Minute Wine Selections for Holiday Gatherings
With all of the inevitable last minute scrambling right now just before the big day a few well thought out wine selections can be very handy in order for you to be able to scratch one more thing off your to do list. With that thought in mind Will Lyons over at the WSJ gives us his thoughts and a short video to make this one last, but very important, item on everyone’s list a little easier to handle and still keep everybody happy.
“With the holidays quickly approaching, we look forward to a gastronomic whirlwind of parties, family reunions and celebratory drinks. Choosing which wines to accompany the festive season is either an absolute delight or a stressful panic. This year, I have done the hard work for you—sipping, slurping and tasting my way through hundreds of wines to find a case full of interesting examples for every occasion and budget.
If there is one date in the calendar when you can justify the expense of that really special bottle, it is Christmas Day, so for every course, I have recommended an outstanding wine for the discerning oenophile. And while there are great sparkling wines outside of France, many of which have been featured in this column throughout the year, it is to the wines from the cool slopes of Champagne, where the grapes struggle to ripen fully, that I frequently return when looking for something sparkling.
His basic three choice approach is always good since it pretty much covers everybody’s basic preferences. Now comes the hard part – Which wine for each of the three? He has some very good suggestions in the video and it is definitely worth watching. A slightly different approach that I have used for years that has never let me down is to have two or three bottles of each of the three basic food wine groups and this has always been enough to keep everybody happy.
